Mission Viejo sold its first houses in 1966 and finished its original master plan by 1993, and Irvine, incorporated in 1971, grew village by village around UC Irvine. Homes from those decades often have a decent walk-in that was finished with wire shelving, which has had thirty or forty years to sag. In the City of Orange, roughly 350 Eichler houses across the Fairhaven, Fairmeadow and Fairhills tracts bring post-and-beam architecture, open plans and very little conventional closet space. And the newest communities, such as Rancho Mission Viejo, which opened its first village, Sendero, in 2013, deliver generous bedrooms that still arrive with builder-grade shelving.
- 1960s to 1990s master-planned homes: out with sagging wire, in with drawers, double-hang and adjustable shelves.
- Eichlers: clean layouts and finishes chosen to sit quietly beside original wood and glass.
- New construction: walk-ins planned around how you actually dress, with real homes for shoes, bags and accessories.
- Doors and garages: new closet doors and garage cabinets can be planned at the same visit.
