Anaheim started in 1857, when a group of German-American settlers came south from San Francisco to plant grapes on roughly 1,200 acres bounded by today's North, South, East and West Streets. That first footprint became the Anaheim Colony Historic District in 1997, the city's first, and it counts more than 1,000 qualified historic structures, from 1890s Queen Anne Victorians to 1910s Craftsman bungalows. Just to the north, the Hoskins district keeps an intact group of postwar ranch houses built in the 1940s and 1950s, while most of West Anaheim was built on former orange groves during the 1950s and 1960s. Anaheim Hills came later, planned on Nohl Ranch land, and its first neighbourhood, Westridge, opened in 1972. In Anaheim, the year a house was built says a lot about what its closets are missing.
