Irvine began as the Irvine Ranch, which James Irvine and his partners started assembling in 1864, and its layout traces to William Pereira's plan for a city of 50,000 around the new University of California campus. Residents voted to incorporate on December 28, 1971, and the city is divided into villages, each with its own shops, schools and architectural theme. Turtle Rock, founded in 1967, was the first hillside village on the ranch; Woodbridge, begun in 1975, is laid out around two artificial lakes; and construction of the Great Park Neighborhoods started in 2013 on the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. Knowing the village and the decade usually tells a designer what the closets look like before the door is opened.
