Villa Park was known as Mountain View when settlers arrived around 1860, and took its present name when it got a post office, since California already had a Mountain View. Grapes, walnuts and apricots gave way to citrus, the main crop for about 60 years; 48 growers formed the Villa Park Orchards Association in 1912, and the greenbelt along Wanda Road, now called Villa Park Knowles, was once the depot for its packinghouse. Citrus ranchers led the push to incorporate in 1962, and at incorporation the whole city was zoned for 20,000-square-foot lots, the half-acre pattern that still shapes it. Nearly every home is a detached single-family house, and about seven in ten were built in the 1960s and 1970s.
Villa Park homes and what they mean for storage
- Mesa Drive and Canyon Crest: estate-zoned streets with lots from roughly half an acre to nearly two acres. Homes this size often have more than one walk-in, and giving each closet its own job, everyday clothes in one and formal and seasonal wear in the other, keeps both from filling up.
- Streets named for pioneer families: roads such as Brewer, Nichols and Morrow, lined with houses from the 1960s and 1970s, the era behind most of the city's homes. Original closets from those years usually hold one rod and one shelf; an adjustable system adds drawers for folded clothes and a second row of hanging.
- The Orchards: a 32-home planned community, one of the few newer tracts in a city built mostly before 1980. Its larger walk-ins suit a full layout from the start, with long hanging on one side, shelves and drawers on the other and a shoe section near the door.
About three in ten Villa Park residents are 65 or older, and a closet planned for easy reach works at every age. Keeping everyday clothes and shoes between waist and shoulder height, swapping low shelves for drawers and moving rarely used items up high puts daily things within arm's length.
