About Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa was founded in 1833, and the state confirmed it as an incorporated city in 1868. The Cherry Street neighbourhood took shape in roughly the decade after the railroad arrived in 1872, and bungalows filled its divided lots between 1905 and 1930. Hugh Codding conceived Montgomery Village in 1949 as a planned community with its own shopping center and pool, and it held 2,600 homes six years later. Bennett Valley sits between Taylor Mountain and Trione-Annadel State Park, with ranch-style houses on its central streets and two-story townhomes from the 1980s. Each era built its own kind of closet, and none of them was planned around a year that runs from freezing mornings to 90-degree afternoons.

Santa Rosa homes and what they mean for storage

  • Cherry Street and the West End: Queen Anne and Italianate houses from the 1880s, bungalows from the early 1900s and modest homes built through the 1940s, where closets are scarce and narrow, so a reach-in fitted from floor to ceiling stands in for the wardrobe these houses were built to hold.
  • Montgomery Village: homes planned from 1949 and largely in place by 1955, where bedroom reach-ins were built around one rod and one shelf, so tall shelf towers and two stacked rods put the wall height to work.
  • Bennett Valley: midcentury ranch houses with three- and four-bedroom layouts and 1980s townhomes with garages, where storage is spread over several modest closets, so each one is fitted for a single job, such as linens, guest clothing or sports gear.

Santa Rosa averages about 29 afternoons a year at 90°F or above and about 30 mornings at freezing, so wardrobes here truly change with the seasons. Upper shelves and bins sized for sweaters, coats and boots let the half of the wardrobe that is not in use move up and out of the way, then trade places with the rest when the weather turns.
