Custom Closets & Organizers in Santa Monica, CA

Santa Monica lies on Rancho San Vicente y Santa Mónica, granted in 1839 to Francisco Sepúlveda. In 1875 Senator John P. Jones and Colonel Robert S. Baker laid out a town on part of their holdings and sold the first lots on July 15 of that year; the city incorporated in 1886. A Long Wharf for large ships went up in 1893, electric trolleys linked the town to Los Angeles from 1896, and the municipal pier was built in 1909. In 1990 the bungalows of the Third Street neighbourhood in Ocean Park became the city's first historic district. Today most Santa Monicans live in apartments and condos, and closets carry more of the load than they do in a house with a garage.

Santa Monica homes and what they mean for storage

  • North of Montana: larger family homes on lots that are mostly 50 by 150 feet, with the city's biggest residential lots north of San Vicente Boulevard. Bigger rooms make room for walk-ins and dressing areas laid out so each person has a defined side.
  • Sunset Park: mostly small one-story houses from the 1940s, with a modest reach-in in each bedroom. A refit with drawers built in and two hanging levels turns each one into a complete wardrobe.
  • Ocean Park: early 20th-century Craftsman and Victorian houses mixed with mid-century apartment buildings, including the bungalows of the Third Street historic district. The older houses have small, oddly proportioned closets, and every one gets its own measured plan.
  • Apartments and condos: multi-unit buildings hold nearly four in five Santa Monica homes, from 1930s to 50s courtyard apartments on San Vicente to newer condos. With no garage or attic to fall back on, a fitted reach-in becomes the main storage in the home.

Nearly half of Santa Monica households are one person, often in a studio or one-bedroom, where a single closet has to do the work of a whole house. Combining hanging, folded clothes, linens and a shelf for the vacuum and cleaning supplies in one well-planned closet keeps the rest of the home clear.
