About San Mateo

San Mateo was incorporated in 1894, and several of its neighbourhoods were later laid out on the grounds of nineteenth-century estates. San Mateo Park was platted in three sections above El Camino Real between 1902 and 1904, and in 1927 the old John Parrott estate was bought for Baywood, where the streets curve with the terrain past Spanish, Tudor, French and Monterey style homes. After the Second World War, Joseph Eichler built just over 200 houses in 19th Avenue Park between 1953 and 1955. Three eras means three kinds of floor plan, and each one draws its own line around where clothes and gear can live.

San Mateo homes and what they mean for storage

  • San Mateo Park: some of the city's oldest residential streets, platted from 1902 to 1904, where early houses were given few closets and shallow ones, so shelving, drawers and rods are built to each closet's real depth rather than a standard size.
  • Baywood and Aragon: Period Revival homes from the mid-1920s and 1930s, with later Ranch and split-level houses mixed in, where bedroom reach-ins are compact and seldom match from room to room, so each one is measured and fitted as its own project.
  • 19th Avenue Park: mid-1950s Eichlers, relatively small houses on small lots, where open living space leaves little solid wall for storage, so a fully fitted reach-in carries the bedroom and a Murphy bed lets a spare room serve as an office.

San Mateo's weather stays mild all year, with average highs from about 58°F in January to 78°F in September, so most households wear the same mix of layers in every month and there is no real off-season to box up. Closets here work best with everything in easy reach: more rod length and open shelving at eye level, and only luggage and keepsakes on the top shelf.
