Custom Closets & Organizers in San Marino, CA

San Marino is named for the ranch of James de Barth Shorb, who named it after a family property in Maryland. Henry E. Huntington bought the Shorb ranch around 1903, and the house Myron Hunt designed for him became part of the Huntington Library, founded in 1919. The city incorporated on April 25, 1913, and its first school opened that September at Monterey Road and Oak Knoll. Two landmarks are older than the city: El Molino Viejo, a grist mill built around 1816 for Mission San Gabriel, and the Michael White Adobe from about 1845. Almost every home in San Marino is a single-family house, and most were built between the 1920s and the early 1950s.

San Marino homes and what they mean for storage

  • Lacy Park and Virginia Road: the streets around a park of about 30 acres on a former lake bed, lined with early garden estate homes such as a 1938 Tudor Revival on Virginia Road. Closets in houses of this age were built for much smaller wardrobes, and a system built to their exact dimensions, sloped ceilings and shallow corners included, makes each one count.
  • Old Mill Road: the residential street around El Molino Viejo, the restored mill that Huntington once used as a golf clubhouse. Large period homes here often have a dressing room, or a spare bedroom that can become one, fitted with wall-to-wall hanging, drawers and a center island.
  • Blocks off Huntington Drive: the residential streets beside the city's main boulevard, home to City Hall and the Centennial Clock. Older garages along these blocks were built for smaller cars, so a row of wall cabinets with racks overhead holds garden tools and seasonal boxes clear of the parking space.

Most San Marino homes are period revival designs, Spanish Colonial, Tudor and Colonial Revival among them, so a new closet should look as if it belongs to the house. Choosing a wood-grain finish, door fronts and hardware that echo the home's original trim lets new storage sit comfortably in an older interior.
