Custom Closets & Organizers in Sacramento, CA

Sacramento grew from New Helvetia, the land John Sutter settled in 1839. In 1848 army engineers surveyed the ground between the river landing and the fort into the gridiron plan the city still uses, with lettered streets running east to west and numbered streets running north to south. In the 1850s and 1860s the city raised its street grade by about ten feet, which turned many original first stories into basements and left the hollow sidewalks downtown. The median home here dates from 1975, but the stock reaches back more than a century, so no two closets start from the same place.

Sacramento homes and what they mean for storage

  • Boulevard Park: built out between 1905 and 1915 on the old state fairgrounds, with Foursquares, Craftsman houses and Classic Box homes set behind 25-foot front setbacks and shallow rear yards. There is little room to add on at the back, so the gain has to come from inside the closet.
  • Poverty Ridge: the ridge where the grandest houses went up between 1870 and 1915, many with a high basement under a raised first story. That basement takes the bulk and the seasonal boxes, which leaves the bedroom closets free for clothes.
  • Newton Booth: a district where Craftsman bungalows make up more than half the houses, on lots about 40 feet wide, with parking and outbuildings along the alleys and narrow driveways. A compact bungalow closet gains the most from shelves cut to its real depth and a slim drawer stack.
  • South Land Park Hills: 49 mid-century homes built in 1955 and 1956, with open plans, low-pitched roofs and garages worked into the design. Open plans leave few walls for furniture, so the closets have to hold what a dresser or an armoire once did.

In many older Sacramento houses the storage sits at two ends of the property, a raised basement under the house and a garage off the back alley. Giving each a job, the basement for bulk and the alley garage for tools and outdoor gear, stops both from filling with the same things.
