Roseville began in 1864, when a Central Pacific Railroad crew laying track reached the site and named it Junction. The railroad moved its Rocklin shops there in the early 1900s, and the town incorporated as Roseville in 1909. Roughly nine in ten of today's homes date from 1970 or later, and about three in four are single-family houses, so the closets here were mostly planned for a modern house. From the bungalows of Old Town to the three-car garages on the west side, the houses ask different things of them.
Roseville homes and what they mean for storage
- Old Town: the downtown plan names two bungalow districts, Old Town and Vernon, made up mostly of single-family houses and cottages. Closets in a bungalow are small, so each one is drawn to its measured opening, with a drawer stack sized to the width left beside the hanging rod.
- Roseville Heights: the neighbourhood beside the downtown core, with restored bungalows from the 1910s to the 1930s among many ranch homes built from 1970 into the 1990s, typically with a two-car garage. Ranch bedrooms of that era were planned around a smaller wardrobe, so a fitted layout takes over the closet and wall cabinets along the garage turn it into a second storage room.
- Sun City Roseville: a 55-and-over community of 3,110 single-story, ranch-style homes. With every room on one floor, storage is planned along the path through the house, with clothes and shoes close to the bedroom and a cabinet wall near the entry from the garage.
- Fiddyment Farm: newer homes on the west side, many of them with three-car garages. The third bay is room for a real storage wall of tall cabinets, a workbench and racks overhead, leaving the other two bays for the cars.
With about three in four Roseville homes a detached house, many households have a patio or backyard to furnish, and the cushions, folding chairs and grill tools that go with it need a place when they are not in use. Deep garage shelves with bins for cushions, a cabinet for grill tools and a wall hook for each folding chair keep the entertaining gear together.
