About Pasadena

Pasadena started with the Indiana Colony, a group of settlers organized from Indiana who incorporated on January 31, 1874 and bought land along the Arroyo Seco; their town became a city in 1886. Bungalow Heaven, built up mostly from 1905 to 1920, was named Pasadena's first locally designated landmark district in 1989, and Madison Heights was largely built out between 1910 and 1917, including houses by Henry and Charles Greene. Pasadena is also considered the birthplace of the bungalow court, while Linda Vista sits on the slope between the Arroyo Seco and the San Rafael Hills. Most of these houses were drawn up long before anyone pictured a modern wardrobe.

Pasadena homes and what they mean for storage

  • Bungalow Heaven: Craftsman bungalows built mostly between 1905 and 1920 on 50-foot lots with garages toward the rear, where bedroom closets are modest and the garage is a walk from the back door, so the bedroom closet takes folded clothes as well as hanging, with slim drawer units and shelves that run to the ceiling.
  • Madison Heights: houses largely built between 1910 and 1917, some by Greene and Greene, where original woodwork, doors and built-ins are part of what owners want to keep, so the closet system sits inside the opening in a finish picked to sit beside the old wood.
  • Bungalow courts: groups of small Craftsman cottages built from about 1910 to 1928 on a shared lot, where a cottage may have only one or two closets, so a wall unit with hanging, shelves and drawers gives the main room storage it was never built with.
  • Linda Vista: hillside homes between the Arroyo Seco and the San Rafael Hills, including the 22 contemporary ranch houses of Pegfair Estates, built from 1961 to 1967 and all but one single-story, where storage spreads along long hallways and bedroom walls, so hall closets and wardrobe walls get long runs of hanging and adjustable shelving.

In many older Pasadena houses, some rooms were never given a closet at all: a sleeping porch later used as a bedroom, a den, or a study off the living room. A built-in wardrobe set against one wall, with hanging, drawers and doors, gives that room its own storage without opening up a wall.
