Palm Springs grew up around Séc-he, the hot mineral spring that has been at the center of life for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians since long before the town existed. In 1876 a federal order set aside reservation land here, and because alternating square-mile sections went to the railroad and to the Band, the city still sits on a checkerboard, with about 6,700 acres of reservation land inside its limits. John Guthrie McCallum arrived in 1884, and his adobe is the oldest building still standing; he platted the first township in 1887, and the city incorporated in 1938. Today Palm Springs counts 52 organized neighbourhoods, from 1920s estates to condominium communities around shared pools.
Palm Springs homes and what they mean for storage
- Las Palmas Estates: a 1926 subdivision of quarter- to third-acre parcels on curving streets, where Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean Revival winter homes were often built in concrete. Thick walls leave little room to enlarge a closet, so the system works within the opening that is already there.
- Condominium communities: condominiums account for nearly one in three Palm Springs homes, many in garden complexes from the 1960s on, arranged around a pool. With little or no garage space, the bedroom and entry closets carry the storage, so each is fitted to hold as much as it can.
- Casitas and guest houses: the city counts about 860 casitas and accessory units in its single-family neighbourhoods, usually one story and compact. A small reach-in with shelves, a short rod and a luggage shelf lets a guest unpack properly.
Palm Springs homes host a steady flow of visitors, so storage for luggage, extra linens, pool towels and spare bedding gets heavy use. A guest closet with a high shelf for suitcases, cubbies for towels and drawers for bedding keeps all of it in one place.
