Glass-walled, open plans are beautiful, and they leave very little solid wall for a closet. In an Alexander house or one of its many modern cousins, storage has to work harder in fewer places:
- Bedroom closets designed floor to ceiling, so every foot of a short wall earns its keep
- Clean-lined finishes that respect mid-century architecture instead of fighting it
- Garage cabinets with doors, which keep pool supplies, golf bags and patio cushions out of the dust
Second homes add their own logic. If you leave for the summer, a closet with labeled space for linens and off-season clothes, and a garage where everything sits behind a door, makes closing the house in spring and reopening it in the fall far less of a chore. Golf households may want a dedicated spot for bags and shoes near the garage entry.
