Palm Desert sits on ancestral Cahuilla land, and the site was first known as the Old MacDonald Ranch before date palms were planted in the 1920s and it became Palm Village. Building on a larger scale began in 1943, tied to the Army's wartime desert training center, and in March 1945 Cliff Henderson assembled about 1,622 acres and formed the Palm Desert Corporation; a post office opened in 1947 and El Paseo took shape after the war. In 1970 a 360-acre desert preserve was set aside that is now a botanical garden and wildlife park, and Palm Desert became a city on November 26, 1973. Nearly a third of today's housing went up in the 1980s, the largest single decade.
Palm Desert homes and what they mean for storage
- Palm Desert Country Club area: begun in 1961 as Palm City, one of California's first retirement communities, and opened to families of all ages in 1964, with detached houses set on roughly 6,000-square-foot parcels. Many of these houses have changed hands more than once, and reach-ins refitted with a drawer bank and a second rod suit how people live in them now.
- Sandpiper and the early condominiums: the Coachella Valley's first condominium project, built from 1958 to 1969 in pinwheel-plan buildings, part of which is now a city historic district. Original closets in these units are compact and worth fitting with care, keeping the mid-century character while adding drawers and shoe storage.
- 1980s neighbourhoods and villas: the decade that produced about 32 percent of local housing, with many single-family homes and attached villas built around shared grounds. Walk-ins in these homes respond well to a fresh layout with separate zones for everyday wear, occasion clothes and shoes.
- Estate residential lots: parts of the city zoned for lots of 40,000 square feet or more, where horses are allowed by permit. Larger houses on these lots often have generous garages, which cabinets and overhead racks keep organized.
More than a third of Palm Desert residents are 65 or older, and many arrived here from a larger house. Closets planned around what a household kept after downsizing, with room for the favorite pieces and nothing wasted on empty shelving, make a smaller home feel complete.
