Orange began in 1871 as Richland, a farm town William T. Glassell laid out around a public square where Chapman and Glassell streets cross; it was renamed Orange a couple of years later and incorporated in 1888. That square is now the Plaza, and the streets around it make up Old Towne, with more than 1,400 structures built before 1940. To the east, El Modena, first settled by Quakers in the 1880s, joined the city in stages, and Santiago Hills and Serrano Heights reach up toward the canyons.
