Mission Viejo sits on land that was once part of a ranch of more than 50,000 acres, held by the O'Neill and Flood families from 1882 and then by the O'Neills alone. The community's master plan was drawn up in 1964 by the developer's own planners, and neighbourhoods opened one after another: El Dorado in 1967, Madrid in 1971, Barcelona in 1972, Castille in 1973. Lake Mission Viejo, a private 124-acre lake formed by damming the Oso Creek canyon, opened to its association members in 1978, and the city incorporated on March 31, 1988. With roughly two-thirds of its homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, the city's closets share a common age.
Mission Viejo homes and what they mean for storage
- 1970s neighbourhoods: close to 40 percent of local housing dates from that decade, and many have since been remodeled room by room. A closet system finished to coordinate with a new kitchen or bath brings the bedroom up to the same standard.
- Around Lake Mission Viejo: homes whose owners belong to the private lake association, with its beaches and boating. Paddleboards, life jackets and beach gear need a dry, organized place in the garage, which wall racks and tall cabinets provide.
- Casta del Sol and Palmia: 55-and-over communities, the first built from 1972 to 1986 and the second from 1988 to 1999, where comfort and reach matter most. Pull-down rods, drawers at waist height and good lighting keep everything within easy reach.
Mission Viejo residents tend to stay put: more than nine in ten lived in the same house a year earlier, and over three quarters own their homes. Years in one house add up to keepsakes, holiday decorations and paperwork, and labeled bins on high shelves with a dedicated cabinet in the garage give them a lasting place.
