La Cañada Flintridge joins two communities with separate beginnings. In 1843 the valley was granted to Ignacio Coronel as Rancho La Cañada, Spanish for the ravine, and in 1875 Jacob Lanterman and Adolphus Williams bought the 5,830-acre rancho, recording a map of 46 large lots in 1881. Flintridge, south of today's Foothill Boulevard, was laid out by Senator Frank P. Flint, whose Flintridge Hotel opened in 1927. The city incorporated on December 8, 1976, and left the hyphen out of its name to show the two communities as one. Nine in ten local residences stand on their own lots, and nearly 80 percent went up before 1970, the 1950s being the busiest decade.
