Custom Closets & Organizers in Hillsborough, CA

Hillsborough sits on part of the former Rancho San Mateo, which W.D.M. Howard bought in 1846, and is named for Hillsborough, New Hampshire, the Howard family's ancestral home. Voters chose to incorporate on May 5, 1910, two years after neighbouring Burlingame, and the new town's first ordinances left out sidewalks, a commercial district and factories. Houses from those early decades still stand, among them Carolands, built from 1914 to 1916 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and Uplands, designed by Willis Polk. The whole town is one residential zoning district with a half-acre minimum lot, and there are no apartments or condominiums within its limits.

Hillsborough homes and what they mean for storage

• Half-acre lots: the minimum lot size under the town's single residential zone. Garages on lots this size often have room beyond the cars, and a full wall of tall cabinets with a workbench section turns that space into a workshop as well as parking.
• Early-century houses: homes from the town's first decades, built when much of a household's clothing was kept in furniture rather than closets. Fitting each original closet with drawers, shelves and double hanging lets those small spaces carry a full modern wardrobe.
• Homes built since 1999: the 231 new single-family houses added between 1999 and 2013, many with large primary closets. A center island of drawers, a full-height shoe section and long hanging for coats and dresses fill a room like that in an orderly way.

Hillsborough households average about three people, and suitcases, carry-ons and travel kits pile up between trips. A high shelf in a hall or guest closet sized to the family's luggage, with a drawer below for adapters and travel pouches, keeps every bag in one place.
