About Glendale

Glendale stands on Rancho San Rafael, granted to José María Verdugo in 1784; the Catalina Verdugo Adobe on Bonita Drive still recalls the family's ranch. The Town of Glendale was platted in 1887 on 150 acres and incorporated in 1906, two years after Leslie C. Brand finished El Miradero, the hillside estate that is now Brand Library, and after electric rail service to downtown Los Angeles began. Today the city counts nine designated historic districts, from Rossmoyne's 500-plus homes to small enclaves such as Cottage Grove, along with foothill neighbourhoods like Verdugo Woodlands. Between the hills, the period homes and the apartment blocks, no single closet plan fits the whole city.

Glendale homes and what they mean for storage

  • Rossmoyne and Royal Boulevard: homes built from the 1920s through the late 1940s in Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and French-inspired styles, with bedroom closets that are tall but narrow. Shelving that climbs to the ceiling and a pull-down rod put that height within reach.
  • Verdugo Woodlands and Brockmont Park: foothill homes where streets wind up the slope and lots tilt, so garages are set wherever the hillside allows and rarely share a standard footprint. Cabinets and shelving built to the measured space make the most of an irregular garage.
  • Cumberland Heights and Ard Eevin Highlands: a mix of 1920s and 1930s Period Revival homes with Minimal Traditional and Ranch houses from the 1940s and 1950s, where reach-ins vary from room to room. Each one is measured on its own and fitted with its own mix of rods, drawers and shelves.
  • Apartments and condos: most of Glendale's homes are in multi-unit buildings, where closets are compact and storage outside the unit is limited. Double hang, shoe shelving and a drawer tower turn a standard reach-in into the main storage for the home.

In much of Glendale, a house from the 1920s to the 1950s has one closet per bedroom and little else, so linens, coats and cleaning supplies compete for the same few doors. Setting aside one reach-in or hall nook as a linen and utility closet, with adjustable shelves and baskets, takes that pressure off the bedrooms.
