Garden Grove started in 1874, when Alonzo Cook bought 160 acres and proposed the name; when critics said the bare land hardly fit it, he answered that they would make it appropriate by planting trees. He gave land for the first schoolhouse and post office, the Pacific Electric line arrived in 1905, and for about the next 40 years the town lived on oranges, walnuts, chili peppers and strawberries. Residents voted to incorporate on June 18, 1956, and the Strawberry Festival has marked that farming past since 1958.
