Fullerton was founded in 1887 by George and Edward Amerige, brothers from Malden, Massachusetts, on land along the new Santa Fe line, and it carries the name of George H. Fullerton, who helped secure the railroad's right of way. The city incorporated in 1904 and spent its early decades packing Valencia oranges and walnuts. Several of its older blocks, including College Park, Hillcrest Drive and Jacaranda, Malvern and Brookdale, are now residential preservation zones, and Sunny Hills was subdivided in 1946 as rural estates with room for fruit trees and horses. A Fullerton closet could date from the 1910s or from the 2000s, and the plan follows from that.
Fullerton homes and what they mean for storage
- Hillcrest Drive and College Park: California bungalows and Spanish Colonial Revival homes built between the 1910s and 1930s, with small bedroom closets. The preservation guidelines cover the outside of the house, so the gain comes from inside: double hang, drawers and shelving fitted to the original opening.
- Jacaranda, Malvern and Brookdale: mid-1920s homes on tree-lined streets where one bedroom closet often has to serve two people. A split layout gives each person a rod, a few drawers and a shelf of their own.
- Sunny Hills: the 1946 rural-estate subdivision, laid out with space for gardens and fruit trees, where rakes, pots and hoses share the garage with everything else. Cabinets with doors and a workbench sort the yard tools from the household overflow.
- Amerige Heights: homes from the early 2000s built on a former industrial site, with roomy walk-ins. Planning those walk-ins around how the household dresses keeps them from becoming a second storage room.
In many Fullerton homes a spare room has to do two jobs, such as a home office that has to turn into a guest room when family visits. A wall bed set into cabinetry, with desk storage beside it, lets the room switch over in a few minutes.
