Elk Grove started in 1850 as a hotel and stage stop about 15 miles south of Sutter's Fort, where James and Sarah Hall built the two-story, 13-room Elk Grove House; a replica stands near the west entrance to Elk Grove Park today. The settlement moved twice, north in 1868 when the railroad line passed it by and again in 1876 to sit closer to the tracks, which is why locals still call the original spot Old Town. The city itself incorporated on July 1, 2000. About seven in ten of its homes were built between 1990 and 2004, so most closets here start from builder shelving rather than from nothing.
Elk Grove homes and what they mean for storage
- Old Town: the oldest part of the city, around the settlement that moved twice before the railroad settled its place. Houses here predate the planned neighbourhoods, and each closet is measured and fitted to the room it serves.
- Laguna West: an 800-acre plan begun in 1990 and laid out with front porches, narrow streets and service alleys, holding 3,127 homes by the 2000 census. Alley and front-facing garages take cabinets along the back wall, leaving the parking space clear.
- Laguna Ridge: a plan adopted in 2004 covering about 1,900 acres and 7,767 homes in three villages, on lots from 45 by 75 feet up to 70 by 122 feet. Garage doors sit 18 to 22 feet back from the front line, which fixes how deep a garage system can run, so the layout is measured before anything is ordered.
- Homes from 1990 to 2004: the fifteen-year span that produced most of the city's housing, generally two-story plans with a walk-in off the primary bedroom. A builder walk-in usually holds one rod and one shelf, and a full layout adds drawers, shoe shelving and hanging at two heights.
Many Elk Grove plans put a loft or bonus room at the top of the stairs, and it tends to collect whatever has no other home. A wall of cabinets with doors below, open shelves above and a desk run along one side turns it into a room with a purpose instead of a landing.
