El Monte sits between the San Gabriel River and the Rio Hondo, and by the 1850s, when settlers from Texas, Arkansas and Missouri put down roots, it was already called the End of the Santa Fe Trail. It became a stagecoach stop in 1858, planted walnut groves from 1888 and incorporated in 1912. In 1934 and 1935 a federal homestead program built 100 houses here, each on roughly three-quarters of an acre so families could grow their own food. Norwood-Cherrylee, Arden Village, Park El Monte and Mountain View each grew from a different chapter of that history, and their closets show it.
El Monte homes and what they mean for storage
- Norwood-Cherrylee: roughly one-third of El Monte's land, with established single-family homes on deep lots first laid out for small-scale farming, and a long equestrian and garden tradition. Yard tools, planters and bulk supplies pile into the garage, so tall cabinets and a sturdy workbench put them in order.
- Arden Village and the streets south of Ramona: small, uniform lots with traditional single-family homes, where bedrooms are compact and the closet is often a single reach-in. Shelving and rods sized to the inch, with drawers built in, let that one closet hold far more.
- Park El Monte: wide, curving streets of low-scale single-family homes, where a bedroom often has to serve as a study or home office too. A desk wall with shelving next to the closet keeps work and wardrobe side by side without crowding the room.
El Monte households average close to four people, well above the county average, and nearly half include four or more. With that many people sharing a home, closets work best divided by person: a length of rod, two or three drawers and a labeled shelf per person, so everyone knows where their things belong.
