Daly City is named for John Daly, who ran a dairy ranch of about 250 acres here from 1868 to 1907. In 1907 he subdivided the land for San Francisco families who needed new homes, creating the city's first residential tracts, and the city incorporated in 1911 under his name. After World War II, Henry Doelger turned about 600 acres of dunes and farmland into Westlake, annexed in 1948. Lots are small and houses sit close together, so the space inside each home is planned with care.
Daly City homes and what they mean for storage
- Crocker: the city's first residential subdivision, from 1907, on a street grid shared with Southern Hills and Bayshore, where pre-war lots run about 2,500 square feet. A small lot means a compact house, and a reach-in fitted with drawers and two rods carries a bedroom's storage.
- Westlake: single-family homes built from 1948 to 1962, mostly in a shared design, with ceilings rarely over 8 feet. With modest ceiling height, closets here gain the most from shelves run right to the top and hanging stacked on two levels.
- Serramonte: homes built from 1963 on a former dairy ranch. Bedroom closets from that decade can take adjustable shelving and a drawer stack in place of the original rod and shelf.
Across Daly City, many houses put the living space upstairs over a ground-floor garage, and that lower level becomes the storage floor of the home. Cabinets along the back wall, a workbench to one side and racks above the parking space keep it organized with the car still inside.
