Custom Closets & Organizers in Atherton, CA

Atherton began as Fair Oaks, a flag stop on the Southern Pacific line from about 1866, on land from the old Rancho de las Pulgas. Faxon D. Atherton, a trader from Massachusetts, bought more than 600 acres in 1860 and later built his home, Valparaiso Park. When Menlo Park moved to incorporate an area that took in Fair Oaks, property owners incorporated separately on September 12, 1923, to keep the area residential, and because another California town already used the name Fair Oaks they chose Atherton. More than 80 subdivisions were recorded in the 1940s and 1950s as the large estates were divided, and most of today's houses date from 1940 to 1959. Commercial and industrial uses are not allowed, and 98 percent of housing is single-family detached.

Atherton homes and what they mean for storage

  • Lindenwood: the former Linden Towers estate of James C. Flood, built in the 1870s and subdivided after the house came down in 1936. Larger houses here often include two walk-ins, and assigning each one to a single person, with hanging, drawers and shoes planned around that person, keeps both in order.
  • One-acre lots: the minimum in the R-1A zone that covers much of the town, where garages tend to have wall space to spare. A long run of cabinets with overhead racks above holds outdoor furniture cushions, sports equipment and seasonal boxes behind doors.
  • 1940s and 1950s houses: the two decades behind most of the town's homes, built as the estates were divided. Bedrooms from that era usually have modest closets, and a drawer tower, a shoe shelf and a second rod make each one hold far more.

Atherton has no commercial district inside town limits, so much of the reading, paperwork and planning happens at home. A study wall of adjustable shelves for books, with closed cabinets below for files and supplies, keeps a home office or library tidy.
