Walnut Creek started as a crossroads called The Corners, where the road from Martinez to San Jose met the road west to Oakland, at today's Main Street and Mt. Diablo Boulevard. The settlement took the name Walnut Creek in 1862 and incorporated on October 21, 1914, as a city of about one square mile. Many subdivisions and apartment buildings followed in the 1950s and 1960s, and most homes date from the 1950s to the 1970s. Nearly half are condos or apartments, so the storage question changes from one street to the next.
Walnut Creek homes and what they mean for storage
- Rancho San Miguel: planned in 1954, with more than 350 mid-century modern homes built around post-and-beam ceilings, floor-to-ceiling rear glass and, from 1957, atrium models. Open plans leave the closets to do the storing, so a fitted reach-in with drawers built in keeps bedrooms clear.
- The Woodlands: a neighbourhood whose homes were mostly built in the early to late 1960s. Closets from that decade can be refit with adjustable shelving and a second rod without changing a wall.
- Northgate: home to a 34-house mid-century modern enclave from about 1969 to 1971. A garage wall of cabinets keeps tools and outdoor gear apart from the house and off the floor.
- Rossmoor: a 55-and-over community of 6,676 homes, from co-ops and condominiums to single-family houses, opened in 1964. Many are garden-style attached homes, so closets are fitted to keep everyday things within easy reach and make full use of a smaller footprint.
Close to 30 percent of Walnut Creek's population is 65 or older, and in many homes the guest room is where grandchildren stay. A closet with low shelves for toys and books, bins for children's bedding and space for a folding crib makes each visit easy to set up and quick to put away.
