Ventura grew around Mission San Buenaventura, founded on March 31, 1782 as the ninth and last mission Junípero Serra established, near the Chumash village of Shisholop. The town incorporated on April 2, 1866 as San Buenaventura, which is still its official name, built its first wooden pier in 1872, and was named county seat in 1873 when Ventura County split from Santa Barbara County. Oil found along Ventura Avenue in 1885 led to major wells from 1914 into the 1920s, and the 1912 courthouse now serves as City Hall. More than half of today's homes are over 50 years old, with the oldest on the west side and in the center of town.
Ventura homes and what they mean for storage
- Westside and the Simpson Tract: small lots of oil-worker cottages and bungalow courts built mostly from 1920 to 1930, including the 182-home Simpson Tract historic district, where most houses are one story with a detached garage at the rear. Bedroom closets are small, and a measured fit-out with drawers and two rods doubles what they hold.
- Midtown: tracts recorded between 1921 and 1925, with Spanish Colonial Revival homes, Craftsman bungalows and duplexes, and later postwar houses. Each era brings a different closet shape, so every plan starts from on-site measurements.
- Pierpont: a 1925 subdivision of small sand lots whose original beach cottages each had a one-car garage, reached today from the lanes. With so little room indoors, precisely sized closets and a cabinet-lined garage carry the storage.
- Ventura Keys: homes along four channels dug in the early 1960s, with more than 300 waterfront lots holding easements for private docks. Life vests, fishing rods and dock lines need a dry, organized spot near the water side of the house.
With a harbor, a pier and miles of coast, plenty of Ventura households keep fishing and boating gear, from rods and tackle boxes to coolers and cushions. A garage wall with vertical rod holders, a tackle cabinet and hooks for nets keeps it ready for the next trip.
