Vallejo traces to 1850, when Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo offered land for a new state capital and the town was laid out after the offer was accepted. The legislature met there in 1852 and 1853, and Vallejo incorporated as a city in 1868. About 63 percent of its homes were built before 1980, and about 70 percent are single-family houses. A Victorian near downtown and a hillside house in Hiddenbrooke have little in common, and the closets show it.
Vallejo homes and what they mean for storage
- Historic districts: the Architectural Heritage District downtown and St. Vincent's Hill, where houses from the 1850s to the 1940s run from Victorian and Italianate to Craftsman and Art Deco. Houses of that age predate the modern wardrobe, so a bedroom closet is often shallow and a garage, where there is one, is often a later addition. Fitted drawers and shelving make the most of what each room allows.
- Country Club Crest: a postwar neighbourhood of bungalows and small single-story ranch houses, many with a prominent attached garage. Small footprints put the weight on the garage, where wall cabinets and overhead racks hold what the closets cannot.
- Glen Cove: a hillside community of Craftsman and traditional-style homes built mostly in the late 1980s, many with an attached two-car garage. Cabinets along one garage wall keep both bays clear for the cars.
- Hiddenbrooke: Mediterranean-style homes from the early 2000s built into a hillside around a golf club. Larger homes mean larger primary suites, which call for a full walk-in layout with a center drawer unit.
There is always a next repair in an older house, and with it the paint cans, spare tiles, bulbs and hardware that go with it. A garage wall of labeled shelves with shallow drawers for hardware, or a closet shelf with lidded bins, gives each item a place so the right one is found on the first try.
