Custom Closets & Organizers in Thousand Oaks, CA

Thousand Oaks lies on Rancho El Conejo, granted in 1803 to José Polanco and Ignacio Rodríguez, two former soldiers of the Santa Barbara Presidio. In 1876 the Grand Union Hotel, now the Stagecoach Inn, went up on the coast stage road through the valley; it was moved for the freeway in 1965 and reopened as a museum in 1976. The city's name honors its oaks, and since 1970 the city has protected them, today covering every oak more than two inches across. Since 1977 the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency has looked after more than 12,700 acres and some 150 miles of trails, so many neighbourhoods back right onto open hills.

Thousand Oaks homes and what they mean for storage

  • Oak-shaded lots: building or grading anywhere near a protected oak's canopy needs a city permit, which makes adding a room or extending a garage harder on many lots. That puts the focus on getting more from the space inside, with closets and garage walls planned to the inch.
  • 1970s neighbourhoods: the 1970s produced more Thousand Oaks homes than any other decade, about one in three, and their reach-ins and walk-ins have now served several sets of owners. Swapping the original fittings for a drawer stack, two hanging levels and movable shelves gives each closet a fresh start.
  • Lang Ranch and Dos Vientos: newer neighbourhoods planned in the late 1980s and built mostly from the 1990s on, set against hundreds of acres of open space. Larger walk-ins here suit a layout with separate sections for each person, shoes on one wall and drawers in the middle.

With more than 150 miles of open-space trails close to home, Thousand Oaks garages fill with hiking boots, mountain bikes, packs and riding gear. Wall-mounted bike hooks, a bench for muddy boots and cabinets for packs and helmets keep that gear ready without blocking the car.
