Temecula was a stop on the Butterfield Overland stage route from 1858 to 1861, and when the California Southern Railroad reached the valley in 1882, businesses moved beside the depot and formed the district now called Old Town. For most of the next century the land around it was cattle country: the Vail family ranch grew to about 87,500 acres before it was sold in December 1964 and planned as Rancho California, with vineyards planted from the late 1960s. When the city incorporated on December 1, 1989, voters chose the name Temecula over Rancho California. Roughly eight in ten homes here were built between 1980 and 2009, which gives Temecula closets a common starting point.
