Sunnyvale began as part of Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas, the land grant Martin Murphy Jr. bought around 1850. Walter E. Crossman laid out a town on 200 acres in 1898, residents adopted the name Sunnyvale in 1901 after Encinal and Murphy were turned down for the post office, and the city incorporated on December 24, 1912. More than 1,000 Eichler homes went up here between 1949 and 1972, and most of today's housing dates from the 1940s through the 1990s. Those post-and-beam houses still decide how a Sunnyvale closet has to work.
Sunnyvale homes and what they mean for storage
- Taaffe-Frances: one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, laid out in the 1925 Pal Jose subdivision and lined with 1920s to 1940s homes, Spanish-style cottages among them. Bedrooms of that era came with narrow reach-ins, so built-in drawers and two levels of hanging take over the work of a dresser.
- Sunnyvale Manor: the city's first Eichler tract, built in 1948 and 1949 on the north side of Maude Avenue. Mid-century homes like these were planned with less storage and no bonus rooms, so each reach-in is fitted from floor to ceiling to hold clothes and linens together.
- Fairbrae: close to 200 Eichlers from 1958 and 1959, where part of the tract is zoned to stay single story. With a second floor off the table, tall garage cabinets and overhead racks supply the room a bigger house would have.
- Lakewood Village: about 1,625 tract homes from the mid to late 1950s, most with three bedrooms and two baths. Three bedrooms of reach-ins add up, and double hang with shelves to the ceiling puts the whole set to use.
Sunnyvale's Eichlers were built with no attic and no crawl space, so the seasonal boxes and spare bedding other houses push overhead need a home below the roofline. Shelving carried to the top of each closet and labeled bins on the garage's upper wall give those things a fixed place.
