Stockton stands on Rancho Campo de los Franceses, the grant Charles Weber took over in 1845. He moved the settlement north toward what is now the Stockton Channel in 1847, laid out a town in 1849 and chose the name Stockton for Commodore Robert F. Stockton, and the city incorporated on July 23, 1850. Dredging in 1933 opened the deepwater channel that still links the city to the bay. A century and a half of building leaves closets here ranging from original 1800s cupboards to builder walk-ins.
Stockton homes and what they mean for storage
- Magnolia Historic District: the city's first historic district, designated in 1984 and residential since the 1860s, with Queen Anne, Stick, Craftsman and Spanish Revival houses. Original closets in houses of that age hold a fraction of a modern wardrobe, so a fitted system rebuilds them from the inside out.
- Lincoln Village: custom lakeside houses built around a 57-acre lake. Custom plans mean no two closets match, so each one is measured and drawn on its own during the visit.
- Brookside: a planned community approved in the late 1980s along the Calaveras and San Joaquin waterways, with levee lots and docks. A garage wall with hooks for life jackets, a cabinet for paddles and dock gear and a shelf for coolers keeps all of it ready and off the floor.
- Newer detached homes: almost nine in ten of the homes built here between 2000 and 2014 were detached single-family houses, most with a primary bedroom walk-in. Those rooms gain the most from a center drawer unit and hanging planned at two heights.
Households here average a little over three people, and holidays tend to mean a long table and the dishes to match. A tall cabinet with deep shelves for serving platters, a drawer for table linens and a bin for candles and place cards keeps the set together between gatherings.
