Simi Valley's name comes from Shimiyi, a Chumash village, and in 1795 the whole valley was granted to Santiago Pico as Rancho Simí, more than 113,000 acres. In 1887 a new land and water company purchased much of the rancho and divided it into farms, and in 1888 a colony from Chicago arrived with twelve pre-cut houses and named its townsite Simiopolis, soon shortened to Simi. The Strathearn family built their farmhouse onto the old adobe in 1892 and 1893, and it now anchors a historical park; the railroad tunnel under Santa Susana Pass opened in 1904. The city incorporated on October 10, 1969, and roughly 70 percent of local housing dates from 1960 to 1989.
