Saratoga was known in turn as McCartysville, Tollgate and Bank Mills before taking its name in the 1860s from Saratoga Springs, New York, because the water of the local Pacific Congress Springs closely matched New York's Congress Springs. Prune and apricot orchards once covered the valley floor, and the Saratoga Blossom Festival ran from 1900 to 1941. Two estates from the 1910s still stand: Villa Montalvo, built from 1912 to 1914 for James D. Phelan, and Hakone, where building began in 1917 and which the city has owned since 1966. Residents voted for cityhood that September, and Saratoga incorporated on October 22, 1956. Single-family detached houses make up about 84 percent of local housing, and roughly three in four were completed from 1950 through 1979.
Saratoga homes and what they mean for storage
- Saratoga Woods: the neighbourhood between Cox Avenue, Saratoga Avenue and Saratoga Creek, limited to single-story homes. With every closet on one floor, the hall closet often carries the household's coats, vacuum and supplies, and splitting it into a hanging side and an adjustable shelf side keeps it from becoming a catch-all.
- The Golden Triangle: the area bounded by Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road and Cox Avenue, mostly ranch homes on quarter-acre lots. Ranch-house garages here often double as storage for the whole house, and wall cabinets along one side with racks overhead keep the parking bays clear.
- Parker Ranch: hillside lots with a one-acre minimum west of Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. Houses on these parcels often have a spare closet that can take over out-of-season clothes and bedding, and shelves with labeled bins make it a working storage room.
Suits, gowns and formal coats need more length and care than everyday clothes. A section of full-length hanging at one end of the closet, with a high shelf for garment bags and a valet rod for laying out an outfit the night before, keeps them uncreased and ready.
