Santa Clara grew up around Mission Santa Clara, founded on January 12, 1777. In October 1847 the town lots near the mission were surveyed into a square plan, the area now called the Old Quad, and the town incorporated on July 5, 1852. After World War II the city spread north and west onto open land, and more of its homes date from 1940 to 1969 than from any other period. Rivermark, begun in 2002, added the newest layer, so a closet here can be anything from a pre-war original to a builder walk-in.
