Custom Closets & Organizers in Redondo Beach, CA

Redondo Beach is named for Rancho Sausal Redondo, the round willow grove ranch, carved from the vast Rancho San Pedro of 1784. Its first industry was salt, from works opened in 1854 beside a natural salt lake, and from 1889 a series of wharves loaded timber from ships onto trains. A three-story resort hotel opened in 1890, the city incorporated on April 29, 1892, and in 1907 George Freeth gave surfing exhibitions here that helped introduce the sport to California; a bust of him stands at the pier. Over the following decades many of the city's single-family streets were rezoned for two or more homes per lot, and that change shapes much of the housing today.

Redondo Beach homes and what they mean for storage

• Townhomes: Redondo built nearly 3,000 attached homes in the 1980s alone, and townhomes now make up about one in seven homes in the city. Storage is spread across several floors, so each level gets its own closet plan instead of one overloaded garage.
• Half-lot homes: R-1A neighbourhoods where standard single-family lots were split in half, leaving narrow houses with slim bedrooms. Closets in these homes are tight, so shelving and rods are sized to the inch and drawers run to the full depth available.
• Original Townsite: a small historic district around Gertruda, Guadalupe, Carnelian and Diamond Streets, listed on the National Register in 1988, with some of the oldest homes in the city. Closets planned around original walls and doorways add storage without changing the character of the rooms.

Redondo has been a surf town since Freeth's demonstrations, and boards, wetsuits and beach gear still compete for space in many homes. A garage wall with board racks, hooks for wetsuits to dry and a cabinet for sandy gear keeps it all out of the living space.
