Custom Closets & Organizers in Piedmont, CA

Piedmont is named after the Piedmont region of Italy, a word meaning foothill. In 1877 James Gamble bought 350 acres from Walter Blair, who had built the Piedmont Springs Hotel beside the spring and run a dairy on what is now Highland Avenue; the hotel burned in November 1892. Residents incorporated on January 31, 1907, ahead of a planned Oakland annexation vote, and the Community Hall and Exedra in Piedmont Park were dedicated in 1925 as part of Albert Farr's civic center plan. The city covers 1.7 square miles, more than 90 percent of its land is housing, and 93 percent of the housing stock is single-family detached, much of it from the early 20th century.

Piedmont homes and what they mean for storage

• Centennial Houses: more than 170 homes over 100 years old, many on Sunnyside, Rose, Lake and Kingston Avenues near Grand Avenue and along Hillside, Bonita and Highland. Houses this age were built with small, few closets, and a system made to each one's exact width and depth, with shelving carried up to the ceiling, adds space without new construction.
• Upper Piedmont: the hillside streets above Highland Avenue, including Sea View Avenue and Glen Alpine Road, where early large homes still stand and lots run larger than in lower Piedmont. Walk-in closets in houses like these suit a center island with long and short hanging on opposite walls.
• Mid-century neighbourhoods: one of the city's five neighbourhood types, alongside bungalow and cottage, streetcar suburb, estate and hillside areas. Bedroom closets from the 1950s and 1960s are usually wide and shallow, and drawers at each end with double hanging between them use the full width.

In a city laid out around Piedmont Park and Dracena Quarry Park, a daily dog walk is part of many routines. A tall cabinet by the back door or in the garage, with hooks for leashes, a shelf for the food bin and a drawer for grooming supplies, keeps the pet gear in one place.
