Oxnard is named for Henry T. Oxnard and his brothers, who agreed to build a beet sugar factory on the plain inland from Port Hueneme after local ranchers pledged 18,000 acres of beets. The factory went up in 1898 and ran from 1899 to 1959, a town grew around its rail station, and Oxnard incorporated on June 30, 1903. Lima beans and sugar beets gave way over time to strawberries and vegetables, and between 1959 and 1965 Channel Islands Harbor was built along the coast, with about 2,150 slips today. The streets laid out near the factory in the 1910s, now the Henry T. Oxnard Historic District, are only one part of a city that runs from 1910s bungalows to harbor homes.
Oxnard homes and what they mean for storage
- Henry T. Oxnard Historic District: 139 contributing houses on F and G Streets, built from 1909 to 1941 and mostly before 1925, about half of them Craftsman bungalows, on deep lots with some of the city's earliest garages. The bungalows' small closets need fitted reach-ins with a drawer column and two rods to supply what the floor plans left out.
- Colonia: a neighbourhood laid out around 1898 for factory and field workers just east of downtown, where newer houses have gone up on empty lots since about 2000. Older and newer homes sit side by side, so closet plans vary from compact reach-ins to standard walk-ins.
- Mandalay Bay: a waterfront development from 1972 with more than 700 homes on boat docks. Garages here hold dock gear and cushions alongside everything else, so full-height cabinets and ceiling racks keep both in order.
- RiverPark: a planned community of single-family and multi-family homes along the Santa Clara River, partly on reclaimed sand-and-gravel land. Its newer houses have larger walk-ins, best split into a defined side for each adult.
Oxnard households average well over three people, and school and sports schedules run through most weeks. A bank of lockers or cubbies, one per child, for uniforms, cleats, backpacks and practice bags keeps the week organized and the entry clear.
