Custom Closets & Organizers in Orinda, CA

Orinda takes its name from the 17th-century poet Katherine Philips, known as the Matchless Orinda; Alice Marsh Camron chose the name Orinda Park, and the post office that opened under it in 1888 became Orinda in 1895. In the mid-1920s E.I. de Laveaga laid out Orinda Village west of San Pablo Creek and gave its streets Spanish names, and the opening of the Caldecott Tunnel in 1937 turned a summer-cabin area into a year-round community. The Orinda Theatre at Moraga Way and Bryant Way opened on December 27, 1941, and cityhood followed on July 1, 1985. Single-family houses make up most of the housing, and the 1950s was the busiest building decade, ahead of the 1960s.

Orinda homes and what they mean for storage

  • Sleepy Hollow: 457 homes on 599 acres, developed in its present form in the early 1950s and entered through stone gates at Miner Road and Lombardy Lane. Replacing the lone rod in a bedroom closet of that decade with a shoe rack, a drawer stack and split-height hanging lets it hold a full wardrobe.
  • Orindawoods: 257 homes on 187 acres, where the first townhomes were occupied in 1975. Townhome closets tend to be narrow, so using the full height to the ceiling, with shelves over the hanging for out-of-season clothes, adds space without adding width.
  • Orinda Village and the Country Club area: the 1920s streets with Spanish names, where the earliest homes are mostly Spanish Revival and ranch houses. Bedrooms in houses from the 1920s and 1930s usually came with a single compact closet each, and a hall or entry closet fitted with shelves and hooks takes pressure off them.

Nearly nine in ten Orinda homes have three or more bedrooms, while households average under three people, so a spare room is common. Turning a small bedroom into a full walk-in, with hanging on two walls, shelves on the third and a drawer island in the middle, gives a household the large closet the house never had.
