Ontario was founded as an irrigation colony: in 1881 George and William Chaffey bought 6,218 acres and the water rights from San Antonio Canyon, began selling colony lots in 1882 and piped water to every farm lot through a mutual water company. They laid out Euclid Avenue 200 feet wide, with a 60-foot median of pepper trees, where a mule-drawn car climbed uphill and then coasted back down with the mules riding on the back. The city incorporated in 1891, and in 1903 an Act of Congress named it a Model Irrigation Colony. Citrus led the economy into the 1950s, and in 1999 the city annexed former dairy land to the south that is now Ontario Ranch. Each of those eras left a different kind of house behind.
Ontario homes and what they mean for storage
- Historic districts near Euclid Avenue: College Park, laid out in 1914 with alleys and 30-foot setbacks, El Morado Court with its Prairie and Pueblo Revival homes from 1912 to 1922, and Rosewood Court's Period Revival houses from 1925 on. Their closets are small and often irregular, so each is measured and fitted to its own shape.
- 1970s and 1980s neighbourhoods: roughly 50 percent of the city's housing comes from this 20-year span, largely single-family houses with standard-depth reach-ins in every bedroom. Adjustable shelves and rods let those closets change as children grow and rooms change hands.
- Ontario Ranch: planned neighbourhoods on former dairy land, the first opening in 2007, with homes from compact condos to houses over 4,000 square feet. Plans run from a tight reach-in fit-out to a full dressing room, depending on the home.
Nearly four in five Ontario households are families, and with more than three people per household the laundry never really stops. Cabinets above the machines, a shelf for detergents and a spot to hang clothes as they come out of the dryer turn the laundry area into one of the hardest-working storage spaces in the house.
