About Oceanside

Oceanside took its name from visitors who spoke of the ocean side of the county, and the words merged when a post office was requested under the name Oceanside. The California Southern Railway reached the coast in 1883, the first pile of the city's wharf was driven in May 1888, and the city incorporated on July 3 of that year. About 69 percent of today's homes were built between 1970 and 1999, so most are newer than the cottages near the pier suggest, and the houses change from one part of town to the next.

Oceanside homes and what they mean for storage

  • Downtown and the pier area: beach cottages, Craftsman and restored Spanish-style houses and a good many condominiums, mostly on small lots. Storage here is tight, so wall-hung and vertical systems that use the full height of a closet carry the most.
  • Fire Mountain: 1970s Craftsman homes and Spanish-style houses of the 1990s on larger lots, with garages that range from detached to attached three-car and RV bays. With that much garage, a complete cabinet wall with overhead racks can hold the gear and leave the vehicle space clear.
  • Rancho del Oro and Ivey Ranch: Spanish-style single-family homes built mainly from the 1980s to the early 2000s in gated and HOA villages, with wide driveways. Homes from this generation typically come with a walk-in and a two-car garage, so the work is a full layout in each.
  • Loma Alta: classic ranch-style homes, many with enclosed garages, from a neighbourhood that dates back to 1928 and is mostly mid-century. Closets of that period are small, so a fitted layout with drawers and two hanging levels adds what the original lacks.

Detached single-family houses make up about 53 percent of Oceanside's homes, and for many of them the garage is the main storage room. The oil, wax, wipes and jumper cables that go with a car, and the covers and hoses that go with a trailer, are easiest to keep in a tall cabinet with labeled shelves.
