Moreno Valley is named for the old community of Moreno, Spanish for brown, after Frank E. Brown, whose Bear Valley Land and Water Company agreed in 1883 to bring mountain water to Moreno and Alessandro. When the water rights were lost in 1899, most settlers left and the rest dry-farmed hay, grain and grapes; for decades the valley stayed farmland, with Sunnymead and Edgemont taking shape as small rural communities that relied on wells. Lake Perris opened to the south in 1973, and on December 3, 1984 Sunnymead, Edgemont and Moreno incorporated together, under the Box Springs Mountains that appear on the city seal. Four in ten of today's homes date from the 1980s alone.
Moreno Valley homes and what they mean for storage
- Rural residential zones: areas zoned for larger lots, from 20,000 square feet to 2.5 acres, where horses and other animals are allowed with corrals set at least 20 feet from the house. Tack, feed and tools need their own home, so closed cabinets and a heavy-duty bench keep them apart from household storage.
- Sunnymead Ranch: a planned community of about 1,467 homes approved in 1984 with 188 acres kept as open space, its houses mostly from the following decade. Many of their closets still have the builder's original shelving, and a refit with a drawer bank and two hanging levels gets more from the same footprint.
- 1980s neighbourhoods citywide: the decade behind 40 percent of local housing, largely detached houses on standard 7,200-square-foot lots. Their attached garages respond well to wall cabinets and overhead storage that clear the floor for parking.
More than eight in ten Moreno Valley households are families, with an average of nearly four people per home, and toys tend to spread from bedrooms into every room. Cube shelving with labeled bins in a closet or spare room gives each child's things a place that is easy to tidy at the end of the day.
