Modesto was laid out in 1870 as a railroad town. The story of its name is on the record: the railroad's founders meant to name it after a banker, he declined the honour, a railroad employee remarked in Spanish on his modesty, and Modesto stuck. The city incorporated on August 6, 1884, and in 1912 the arch went up at Ninth and I Streets carrying the motto Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health in 696 bulbs. Its oldest streets and its newest plans sit a few miles apart, and they ask for very different closets.

Modesto homes and what they mean for storage

• College Area: subdivided from 1905 and built up through the 1920s and 1930s, then extended with cul-de-sac streets, so bungalows, Craftsman cottages and mid-century ranch houses share the same shaded avenues. One neighbourhood can hold three eras of closet, and each gets the layout its own room allows.
• Graceada Park: the streets around a park deeded in 1906 and dedicated in 1907, among the first laid out on the city grid, with houses from the 1920s and earlier. • Village One: a city plan area east of the centre, filed in 1990 and amended several times since, so its homes are newer and generally come with a walk-in and a larger garage. A center drawer unit, a shoe wall and hanging at two heights turn a builder walk-in into a full layout.

In a valley town a fair number of households keep work clothes and boots that should not come through the house. A bench with a boot rack below, hooks above and a closed cabinet for jackets and gloves, set by the door from the garage, keeps the outdoor layer where it belongs.
