Los Altos Hills grew from old land grants that became cattle ranches and Zinfandel vineyards; after a blight around 1900, orchards of apricots, plums and prunes took their place, and in the 1950s the hills were still largely apricot orchards. Residents incorporated on January 27, 1956, to keep the rural character of the foothills, and one-acre lots were a founding goal; Ruth McMahon rode her horse door to door to gather petition signatures.
