Long Beach grew up between two ranchos whose houses still stand: the Rancho Los Alamitos ranch house, begun as a small adobe in the early 1800s, and the Rancho Los Cerritos adobe, built in 1844 at the center of a cattle ranch. William Willmore laid out a townsite called Willmore City in 1882, the town incorporated as Long Beach in 1888 and incorporated again in 1897, and in 1905 crews began dredging the canals of Naples. Neighbourhoods filled in decade by decade, from the 1920s and 30s houses of Bixby Knolls and the Wrigley area to the postwar streets of Los Altos. More than 80 percent of the city's homes are now over 50 years old, so most closet projects here start with an older floor plan.
Long Beach homes and what they mean for storage
- Bixby Knolls: homes built mostly between 1925 and 1938, led by Spanish Colonial Revival, on lots that often run past 10,000 square feet. The houses are larger than most of their era, but the bedroom closets were sized for the 1930s, so a reworked layout with a drawer bank and two hanging levels brings them in line with the rooms.
- Wrigley Area: stucco cottages built between 1928 and 1940 on 50-foot lots, many with small bedrooms and a single reach-in. Shelves and rods cut to fit, with a narrow drawer stack, make that one closet hold a full wardrobe.
- Los Altos: 1950s three-bedroom, two-bath homes built on former sugar beet and bean fields, many since enlarged with a family room. Those additions rarely came with built-in storage, so a wall of cabinets and shelving gives the new room somewhere to put things.
- Naples: homes on small lots along the canals, many without a driveway or garage, so every bike, beach chair and holiday box has to live inside. Closets planned to the inch, with high shelves for seldom-used items, carry the storage a garage would.
Across the city's older neighbourhoods, the garage is often a detached single-car building at the back of the lot, too small for a car and the household's overflow. Wall cabinets, overhead racks and a narrow workbench along one side can let it hold both.
