About La Mesa

La Mesa means the table, for the tableland east of San Diego. The town began as La Mesa Springs: Robert Allison bought 4,000 acres in 1868 and the natural springs drew him in 1869, the San Diego and Cuyamaca Eastern Railroad arrived in 1889, and about 700 residents voted to incorporate in February 1912. Nearly half of the city's housing is multifamily, and fewer than half of its households own their homes. From the Village streets to the hillsides the houses vary a great deal, and so do the closets.

La Mesa homes and what they mean for storage

  • The Village: the streets around downtown, where the city's housing plan notes homes from the early 1900s, from Folk Victorian farmhouses to Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Eclectic houses. Closets from that period are small and shallow, so hanging and drawers are drawn to the room as it is.
  • Mount Nebo and Windsor Hills: hillside tracts laid out in 1907 and 1927, with concrete public stairways from about 1927 climbing the slope. On steep lots the garage tends to be tight, so cabinets that climb the wall and racks above them use the height rather than the floor.
  • Murray Manor and the north side: early-to-mid-1950s tract homes along the Lake Murray Boulevard and Baltimore Drive corridors, built to matching plans. Closets of that decade are compact and repeat from house to house, so a fitted layout of drawers and two rods helps each one.
  • Grossmont and the Mount Helix area: an early 1900s hillside neighbourhood that continues into the unincorporated area next to the city, with Craftsman-influenced houses and mid-century homes with walls of glass. Walls of glass leave less wall to work with, so storage is planned into the walls that remain.

Nearly half of La Mesa's homes are in multifamily buildings, where space is tight, and the broom, mop and cleaning supplies tend to end up in the closet meant for clothes. A narrow cabinet with a hook rail for the tools and shelves for the supplies gives them a closet of their own.
