Willow Glen is home to the largest concentration of Eichlers in San Jose, roughly 350 built between 1957 and 1962 according to local Eichler specialists. The Fairglen Additions, 218 houses completed between 1959 and 1961, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. Eichlers were designed around open plans and walls of glass, and their closets are modest, so the overflow tends to land in the garage. Across the rest of the valley, ranch homes and newer two-story houses ask the garage to be a workshop, a gym and a storeroom at once.
- Closed cabinets: tools, paint, electronics and spare parts behind doors, off the floor.
- Workbench: a solid surface built into the cabinet run for projects and repairs.
- Slatwall: hooks and baskets that keep bikes, helmets and garden tools within reach.
- Open floor: cabinets on the walls, so there is room left for a car, a rack or a rowing machine.
