The modern San Diego suburb took shape after World War II. Clairemont, recorded in 1950 on a mesa above Mission Bay, became the city's biggest postwar subdivision, built for a region growing fast on military and aerospace work, and many of its homes date to the 1950s and 1960s. Newer neighborhoods spread across the county in the decades that followed, from the coast to North County and East County.
Whatever the era, a San Diego garage tends to be asked to do three jobs at once: park the car, store the gear and host the projects. If yours holds wetsuits, beach chairs, coolers and the bikes nobody rides during June Gloom, cabinets give every category a home.
- Closed cabinets: gear stays behind doors and off the floor instead of in open boxes.
- Tall cabinets: a place for longer items such as folding chairs and beach umbrellas.
- A workbench: room for repairs, waxing and weekend projects.
