Fremont was incorporated in January 1956, when five townships, Mission San Jose, Centerville, Niles, Irvington and Warm Springs, joined as one city. The oldest of them dates to 1797, when Mission San Jose was founded, and Niles was the early home of California's film industry from 1912 to 1916. Most of the city's homes were built between 1960 and 1999, and the postwar ranch house with an attached garage at the front set the pattern. With five old towns under one name, a closet plan starts with which part of Fremont the house is in.
Fremont homes and what they mean for storage
- Niles: where at least 17 subdivisions were laid out between 1900 and 1942, many with one-story bungalows on rectangular footprints. Bungalow closets tend to be compact, so shelving cut to their true depth and a slim drawer stack make the most of them.
- Glenmoor Gardens: a Centerville tract built from 1952 to 1966 on larger lots with deep setbacks, with floor plans from under 1,300 to over 2,000 square feet. The bigger plans often have a primary closet that can take a full layout of long hanging, drawers and a shoe section.
- Mission Ranch: ranch homes from 1956 to 1961 near the Mission San Jose hills, offered with three to five bedrooms. With that many bedrooms, each reach-in can be planned for the person using it, from adjustable rods for children to double hang for adults.
- Irvington Square: about 700 lots from 1954 and 1955, Irvington's first large residential development, where many houses share the same model plans. A layout proven in one closet can be adapted to the matching closet next door, though each is still measured, since remodels change things over time.
Fremont households average close to three people, and the family room is where games, puzzles, craft kits and school projects tend to pile up. A wall of cabinets with doors below and adjustable shelves above keeps them sorted and lets the room reset at the end of the day.
