Danville takes its name from Danville, Kentucky, where Andrew Inman's mother-in-law grew up; Dan and Andrew Inman bought 400 acres of what is now Old Town in 1854, and mail service followed in 1860. The first Southern Pacific train reached Danville on June 7, 1891, and Hartz Avenue began when John and Catharina Hartz sold land for the station and divided the rest into 74 lots. The depot was moved 600 feet in 1996 and has housed the Museum of the San Ramon Valley since 1999. Residents voted to incorporate in 1982. Roughly 76 percent of local housing is single-family detached, and the 1970s and 1990s together produced over half of it.
Danville homes and what they mean for storage
- Old Town and Hartz Avenue: the historic center, where the 1892 Danville Hotel was turned to face Hartz Avenue in 1927. Older houses near downtown have small closets, and a corner unit that carries shelving around the inside edges reaches space a straight rod leaves empty.
- 1990s neighbourhoods: the decade that added more than 3,600 homes to town, many with larger primary closets that still have their builder's shelving. A planned layout with drawers, shelves and both long and short hanging makes that space work for two people.
- Townhomes and attached homes: close to one in five Danville homes. With fewer closets and smaller garages, wall-mounted garage cabinets and a Murphy bed that folds away in a spare room stretch the space a long way.
The Iron Horse Regional Trail follows the old Southern Pacific line through town, and bikes are part of many households' weekends. Wall hooks in the garage that hang bikes vertically, with a shelf above for helmets and a cabinet for pumps and tools, keep them ready and off the floor.
